Witching You a Happy Halloween!! - 7 Weeks - 10/13/15

Poor ChaCha, she has a ‘spell’ on her!!!   She REALLY doesn’t want to have the little trick or treaters hanging off her anymore, BUT…….oh she Boo Whoo’d and Howled a lot when I finally took them away from her for good.   She loves the little monsters.. I mean darlings a lot!!!

Grandma June has been taking the little tricksters on their daily walk abouts, watching to see how they react to different  noises, vehicles, animals, plants, toys etc…. So much to smell and explore!!!    So many SCAREY adventures!!!  I always teach them to come to me when they are afraid so that they learn that humans are their saviors and that the humans will protect them.  This philosophy comes in REAL handy later on in their lives. It is fun to watch them figure things out and become their own little selves.

It has been so nice that the Howl Weeners have spent pretty much all day outside learning how to become dogs!!!  At night them still come into the garage, where they have their own kennel set up along with their ‘litter box’.   They learn very quickly that using the litter box keeps them very clean and they never never never go potty where they sleep.  Hopefully, teaching them now that there is an appropriate place and an appropriate time to go to the bathroom will make housebreaking go really fast and easy later on.

Today they went to the vet for their final checkup before it is time to say Boo to YOU from our CREW and send them home.   My vet has a checklist with every body part listed so that she can make notes about anything she thinks you and your vet should be aware of and keep a eye on.  I do NOT like surprises, so I ask her to note EVERYTHING for you and your vet to watch.   Happily, there really weren’t any surprises - all hearts and lungs sounded good, both boys had the required two testicles, and all pups enjoyed all the attention.  Skelee weighed a whopping 18.2 pounds already, Frankie is at 17.1, Punkin at 15.6 and Boo is the ‘little’ one at 15 pounds.  They continue to be BIG for their age!!!  They got wormed for the 3rd time, had their first puppy vaccinations which was a little ouch, and then they got microchipped for permanent identification which was a BIG ouch!!!  Yikes the size of that needle is TERRIFYING!!!   All new puppy families receive a copy of the final checkup along with all the other fun forms -AKC registration, Microchip registration, and lots of Grandma June advice on training and raising a perfect puppy.

HAPPY HAUNTING!! - 5.5 Weeks Old - 10/3/15

The sweet little “treats” have gotten to be a little bit more “tricky”!!   Their curiosity, courage, and energy levels have all risen dramatically so every day is ripe for conquest and adventure!!!

They spend much of the day romping, rolling, jumping, hopping and bowling each other over in their eagerness to continue to learn.  They got to go outside for the first time and LOVED this whole new world they didn’t even know existed!!!   WHO KNEW!!!  Their poor toys have suffered much, but their teeth have been the benefactor and ChaCha the recipient !!!   As if the toenail daggers were not enough, the emergence of teeth was pretty much her undoing!!!  She has reached the point of the ‘long suffering look’ which tells me that weaning is around the corner.  She will no longer lay down to feed them so they hang off her to eat - hence the long suffering look!!!   Can’t blame her there!!!

Introducing puppy milk replacer is always well received by the puppies, a huge mess for me, and a welcome chore for ChaCha who gamely cleans them up after their first attempts at snorkeling in the milk.   They quickly get the hang of NOT getting the milk up their noses, but it takes them much longer to figure out that they don’t need to dive in and swim in it either!!!

Grandma June insisted on another annoying toenail trim, but tricked them into liking it with the wonderful wormer treat!!  For the rest of their lives they should really have the tricky toenail trim and the wormer treat on a monthly basis!! - just sayin’.

Taking picture of them alone again this week is a very wonderful and telling experience for them and me!   How they react to being ALONE in a completely new situation helps me learn WHO they are.   And who they are is the most important part of making sure I place them with the right family for them.   I can tell you that this is a unique little bunch - personality wise, they are all little TREATS - not a TRICKSTER in the bunch, but that could change yet too as they continue to change every week!!
