The "LION KING" Litter

7.5 Weeks Old - 3/3/13

Take Your Place in the Circle of Life
Another very busy week in the lives of the Lion Kings! They have really changed again this week and gained lots of confidence in themselves and their world. They have grown, matured, and really turned into PLAYFUL, full of MISCHIEF puppies. The cold and snowy weather has prohibited them from spending much time outside but every day I turn them loose to just run and play and terrorize their toys. There is a method to the madness in watching them play!! I initiate a lot of different kinds of play as these are very much so observation and training sessions whether they know it or not and also a very useful means of wearing the little monsters, (I mean DARLINGS!) out. Remember, a tired puppy is a good puppy!

This was a BIG week for them! They had their final vet check on Friday. Everyone weighed in between 10 pounds and 13.5 pounds. They got their first puppy shot (OUCH!), wormed AGAIN (yuck!), another toe nail trim (very annoying), and microchipped for permanent identification (BIG OUCH!!) Considering the size of the microchip needle, it is pretty impressive how well our little “Lions” handle it!!! It helps that we rather quickly give them the good tasting wormer!!! Don’t ask me how I KNOW that it is good tasting!!! Lets just assume that I don’t have worms nor will I ever have Rabies or Distemper for that matter! Stuff occurs! I have a check list my vet fills out that lists every possible body part so that she can make notations if she thinks there is anything you or your vet should be aware of. I will send a copy in each puppies going home packet along with all their other health records. All pups have great hearts, all lungs are good, no hernias, all testicles down - a very nice healthy litter!!! We have LOADS of fun visiting with all the Ridgeback Lovers at the vet clinic!!!

They are eating little machines!! I have them eating twice a day now to help make the transition to being with their new family. I will send samples of the food I am feeding them currently home with each pup so that we don’t have to change THAT too! They are VERY good at using their litter box so YOUR job will be to show them where YOU want them to go potty and immediately CARRY them to that spot and teach them where the new ‘litter box’ is at your house.

It is time for us to say goodbye, hear the little Lion Kings roar, and let them go forward to take their place in THE CIRCLE OF LIFE !!!

6 Weeks Old - 2/22/12

There's More to Being a King
What fun the Lion Kings are having now!!! They spend most of their day romping, rolling, and wrestling around with each other! Disemboweling their stuffed animals seems to be an all time favorite – hmmmmm!!! The only good thing about that is that they are NOT chewing on each others’ ears, toes & tails!!!

They all have teeth – sharp little pointy teeth! That was the last straw for Momma DeLorean!! The little monsters, I mean darlings, are now weaned completely!!! They love, love, love their puppy mush and are eating very well 3-4 times a day - much more neatly than they used to I might add !! By the time they come home to you, I will have adjusted them to eating twice a day which is what I recommend for the rest of their lives.

Litter box training continues to go very well. No accidents anywhere – they all use the litter box which makes keeping them clean MUCH easier.

Another toenail trim of course, and another worming! They are wormed 3 times before they come home to you so that they can’t be carrying worms which, as a puppy, they are exposed to all the time. Until at least a year old, I recommend that you continue to worm your puppy every month because they just insist on putting everything in their mouths no matter how disgusting! I really like a product called Iverheart Max which is the generic of Heartguard BUT it has an additional ingredient that also kills tape worms AND it is cheaper than Heartguard but has the same active ingredients.

This session of pictures is always VERY interesting. It is the first time I take each puppy away ALONE, put them in a strange environment and not only take pictures but just watch to see how they react. They are definitely becoming their own little selves, but their own unique personalities are just starting to develop. Next week will be a big week for them as they will go to the vet for their final vet check, get their fist puppy vaccinations, get microchipped - AND those personalities will really become evident.
